Sheep  Herding
It is getting to be that time of year again – sheep herding !

We will be doing sheep herding this Friday afternoon/evening, March 19th, and then doing some herding instinct tests on Saturday morning, March 20th. The Saturday AM slots are full, but we still have slots on Friday. The sheep are fat & lazy, so we can’t work them too much.  This will be done outside, weather permitting, or inside in a round pen.

On Friday & Saturday, April 2nd & 3rd, we again will be doing sheep herding.
Let Jane or Carrie know if you are interested in sheep time.dotted lineCanine Good Citizen Testing
Saturday, March 27, 2010

We will be having the CGC testing done here at the training center.  A practice session will be held here on Monday, March 22 at 7:30 PM to go thru and practice all the stations that will be on the test. Cost is $15 per dog for practice time, and you will be assigned a time for the actual test day so that you do not have to sit around for a long time. There will be no therapy dog testing. Registration starts at 9:30 AM on Saturday March 27 with the testing to begin at 10 AM. Cost is $10 per dog and you should bring your original rabies certificate and a comb or brush for the dog both to practice and day of test. Please register early - spots fill fast!

More Info on the GTKC Conformation & Obedience Show
June 18, 19 & 20

Starting April 1, 2010, mixed breeds can show only in agility, obedience & rally specified AKC shows. They will compete with the purebreds in the same classes.  If you plan to show in AKC trials with a mixed breed, you will need to apply to the AMERICAN KENNEL CLUB www.akc.org  and register in their “Canine Partners” program. You need to have your Canine Partner registration number when you register for  the show. So if you plan to enter the June show at the civic center, you need to apply NOW!  It can be done online, or the forms are available at the training center.

UKC Club in Our Area
We are seriously organizing a UKC Club in this area (northern Michigan).  Beckie Gauld, Cathy Winkler & Jane have been in contact with UKC and are doing the preliminary work to establish the club. We have a listing of people who are seriously interested. The club would be for obedience, rally and agility only – no conformation.  If you are interested or would like more information, you can contact Beckie Gauld screech1943@gmail.com   or call and leave a message 231-590-5516 (cell)  I have rule books available for agility, and for obedience & rally. Cost is $5 each. We will be announcing shortly when we will be having the meeting.

FLYBALL is coming!
1st meeting is Friday, April 23rd at 7 PM
This meeting will be an introductory meeting but bring your dogs. Cost for this meeting is $10 per dog. You should let Jane know by Tuesday, April 20th if you are coming so we know how many handouts we will need.

We are looking for beginning people interested in Flyball. This would be a very beginning level to just try it. We would like to start in March, probably here at the training center. Joy Cowles will be the instructor. We are not planning on teaching racing on a real team. We will be teaching the basics of hurdle jumping, hurdle racing against another dog or team, we may or may not use the four hurdles or standard jump heights required of a racing team. We may not train starts or passes that a racing team would need. This would be strictly a modified  introductory phase.

And for those interested - Scent Hurdling!
Scent hurdle, same as above except no flyball box. Instead the dogs retrieve their dumbbell. In competition scent hurdle the dogs retrieve numbered dumbbells, 1-4 one scented for each handler and dog. As each team dog retrieves it’s owner scented bell a blank unnumbered unscented bell is put into the empty spot on the box( a scent box is a something like a shadow box divided by four numbered sections . In modified the dogs retrieve only their own training bell. No blank is inserted. No box is actually needed. A really old AKC rule book would have the description of scent hurdle racing. It used to be only for UD trained dogs, or dogs that had scent article training.

Modified just means we are not training in competition mode.

This came from a friend of mine……
I spoke with a woman who will be without a home by the 31st of this month.  She is heartsick at the thought of losing her pets and is trying to find homes for all three so that she doesn’t have to take them to the shelter.

She has a 1 year old Aussie/Heeler mix, female, unspayed, all black with just a white tip on her tail, has rabies and 1st only vacs.  She’s friendly, gets along with people, kids, other pets. She also has two female, unspayed, black Burmese cats – they are also a year old and are litter mates.  They are strictly indoor cats.

If you could pass the word, or know of someone, please let me know.  Finding a good home for them would make all the difference in their lives and would bless this woman’s heart no end.

Thanks,  Sue Weston

And another call I received from a friend…..
received a call from a 62 year old lady who is looking to rehome her Aussie.  She purchased the Aussie as a puppy, but has not done any training at all with him.  She wants to rehome him because she feels guilty that he has to be home alone most of the day and she is having some health issues.  He is crate trained.

He is currently 14 months old, neutered and up-to-date on all shots.  His name is Murphy and he is red and white.

I have personally met Murphy while he was being boarded at a local kennel.  I went to meet him without anyone else around and he was VERY friendly.  He showed NO aggression at all.  He is not trained and a little on the wild side.  He has springs in his legs and likes to jump.  Structurally he looked good, but then again I’m not a vet.  I would think that with the proper training and exercise he would make a great performance dog.

This lady, Louise, paid $1,500 for him (show quality is what she was told) and would like to get a couple hundred for him, plus the satisfaction knowing that he is going to a good and loving home.

So, with that said, I’m asking for your assistance in getting the word out to see if we can find him a home.  If you know of someone who is interested in him, they can reach Louise at 231-547-2851 and make sure they mention that they heard about him through contacts that Janine has made.

Thanks for your help.  Let’s keep our fingers crossed that this nice little boy will find his forever home.

Janine

And another one needs a home…
Maggie is a very small, black Miniature Schnauzer looking for a new home.  According to her retired owners, she is too active for them, and she needs more activity than they can provide.  They purchased her for $200 when she was about 8 months old (I think she is around 14 months now) and she had been in two other homes.  She is very playful, but a bit timid.  She likes to fetch a tennis ball.  She will need training in handling, as she is very sensitive about having her feet touched. (I know this well, as I am her groomer)  I will attach a picture or two, and if you know anyone who would be a good match, they may contact me and I can put them in touch with the owner, who will keep her until a new home is found.  Maggie has all her shots, is spayed, and ready to go.  They are asking $150.
