Hi Everybody -
I have been busy gathering information for this newsletter, and time has just slipped by! Many of you have participated in classes, workshops, trials, and so forth. We are planning to offer more of these to make the winter pass by quicker. It looks as if winter is here to stay now, but it is warm in the dog training center.
First Aid Care for Your Pets
November 22nd
This Saturday, November 22nd, Mary Belanger will be holding a class on Pet First Aid at the Cherryland Humane Society. Check in is at 8:30 with class starting at 9 AM & ending between 3 - 4 PM. Cost is $89 plus a dontaion to the Humane Society. Pet First Aid is the immediate care given to a pet who is injured or ill. Knowing the skills and techniques of pet first aid can mean the difference between life and death for your pet. To sign up or more info, call Mary Belanger @ 946-3646.
Canine Accupuncture Chiropractic Seminar
December 6th 10 AM - 1 PM
Dr. Pam Graves, DVM CAC will be holding a seminar on Saturday, December 6th at the Emmet County Fairgrounds. Time is from 10 AM til 1 PM. No Charge - Donations accepted for animals in need. For more info cal the Emmet-Charlevoix fair office @ 231-347-1010 Dogs must have prior approval to attend.
Mini-Seminars/Workshops
Coming in January, February, & March
Starting in January, we will be holding one mini-seminar/workshop per month. They will be on Saturdays - from 3 to 5 PM. Cost is $20 per Saturday, but if you pay for all of them up front, it is $50 for all 3 Saturdays. Topics will be:
January 17th - Do you REALLY know what is in your kibble dog food?
Bring your label from your dog food bag & learn what those big words mean (ex. chicken by-products, chicken meal, cellulose etc.)
February 7th - What you can do with your dog & a clicker
Learn how to "shape " your dog & establish the clicker as a signal. Clickers will be furnished. You will need your dog at this class.
March 21st - Let's talk about freeze-dried, dehydrated, frozen & raw dog food.
Learn about some newer types of dog food and when it is appropriate & why you may want to feed these types.
Obedience Seminar
May 2nd & 3rd, 2009
Adele Yunck will be doing a seminar on Saturday, May 2nd & then private lessons on Sunday, May 3rd here at the training center. Let Jane know if you are interested in either or both of these dates.
Drafting & Weight Pulling With Your Dog in the Wintertime
Yes, you can still do drafting with your dog in the wintertime. Joy Cowles' dogs are excited to see the snow and get outside. Just change the wheels on your cart to runners, and off you go! Beginning Obedience Class
Monday, January 5th - 7:30 PM
Beginning obedience class with start Monday, January 5th @ 7:30 PM for 6 weeks for $80. If interested, contact Jane to reserve a spot in the class.
2009 Winter League
Yes, it is that time of year again! League play will be for 8 weeks - starting Monday, January 12, 2009 and will be completed on Saturday, March 7th. Awards & potluck will be on Saturday, March 14th. Each team will consist of 3 -dog/handlers. You must come up with a name for your team (this is the fun part). The top 2 scores out of the 3 - dog/handlers will place the team for that particular week. We will have several divisions based on the level of the dog/handlers plus individual awards. Cost is $20 per handler/dog for all 8 weeks. If you have any questions, call or email me. If you don't have a team & want to play, let me know & I will match you up with others. 2009 Obedience Matches
We will be having Obedience matches (UKC & AKC) here on Sundays at the training center. Dates are January 18th, February 22nd, and March 22nd. There will be pre-novice, novice, open, & utility. Flyers will be available soon. There will be 2 rings going at the same time. For more info, contact Jane.
Dog Expo "Canine Contacts" 2009
Plans are already starting to take place. It will take place again at the Kaliseum in Kalkaska. The group this year is the Kalkaska Citizens for Animals. If you would like to be on a committee or just have ideas or suggestions for the expo, please let Jane know. I am looking for someone to help with publicity. I know it seems far away, but it is only 7 months from now!
ANNUAL AWARDS REPORT - 2008
Anyone who has a dog(s) that has accomplished a title in 2008, should fill out a form (to be available at the training center or will be out on the website in December). This can be in conformation, agility, rally, obedience, best of breed from any dog affiliated association (:ukc, cpe, akc, etc.) Lu Capra will be compiling the information. Start now getting the information together. Cut off to Lu will be January 30th.
2009 Teacup Trial Schedule

- April 17, 18 & 19 (Distance Workshop held on Friday, Apr 17) Judge is Margaret Hendershot
- May 30th TEacup match for newbies (new people matched up with a mentor for that day)

- Oct 9,10 & 11 Teacup Nationals (Location to be determined)
- November 7 & 8 Trial
We plan that one of the trials will be a 3 day trial (Fri Sat Sun) which trial has not yet been determined.
