Mid-February 2008

Hi Everybody -

Isn't this weather challenging? Rain, freezing rain, sleet, snow - and now they are going to add the wind! Everybody has been challenged to get here to do the league - what dedication! Anyway, I am excited about a few things that are going to be going on here, that I just couldn't wait til March to announce them! So this will be short (for me!) and I hope you can join the fun!

DOG EXPO
June 28, 2008
We will be having the dog expo again this year, Saturday, June 28th from 10 AM to 4 PM at the Kaliseum in Kalkaska. We will have some new events, Parade of Breeds, and more vendors this year. Comittee lists will be coming out shortly so people can volunteer for areas where they would like to help. Profits this year will be donated to AC Paw. Mark your calendars!

Therapy Dog International (TDI) Testing
Sunday, April 6th
Therapy Dog International Inc. (TDI) is an organization dedicated to the regulation, testing, selection and registration of qualified dogs and handlers for the purpose of visitations to hospitals, nursing homes and facilities or any place where therapy dogs are needed. The certification program welcomes both purebred and mixed breed dogs. You and your dog will be required to complete the 10 steps for the AKC's CGC test and the additional TDI requirements. Dogs must be tested on a flat buckle collar. No treats allowed during the test. You must have your original rabies certificate, not the tag.

There will be a practice session (NOT REQUIRED) to go over all the tests for the TDI on Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at 7 PM. Cost for the practice is $15 per dog. All checks should be payable to Pine Meadows DTC.

Testing will take place Sunday, April 6th at Pine Meadows Dog Training Center Cost: $20 per dog. Hours are 11 AM - 3 PM. You will have a scheduled time to be there so you do not have to sit & wait. Testing is limited to 16 dogs. Call to reserve a spot - Jane McManus (231) 633-2067 or 1-877-276-6215.

Puppy Agility Class
Starts Thursday, March 13th at 7:30 PM
We will be having a puppy agility class. Class limited to 10 dogs. Call or email Jane if interested as class has just a few spots left! It will be for 5 weeks for $65.

Handling Class
Tuesdays at 3:30 PM to 4 PM from now thru March
This is a drop in class - FREE! No one really in charge - just who ever shows up will be able to work their dogs. Call ahead if weather is bad to be sure there is a class that day. This class will end March 25th.

Advanced Obedience Classes to Start in April
Lu Capra will be teaching beginning on Tuesday, April 1st. It will be from 2:30-3:30 on Tues. afternoons and will be geared to more advanced exercises than Novice. It will include Open and Utility exercises, but just so you know, she plans on spending quite a bit of time on parts of exercises with lots of proofing rather than on lots of run-throughs. For exampe, she will begin by focusing on attention in many different situations and when teams are doing many different exercises including those from Open and Utility (if you are working on those). But you can also use the proofing for attention if you are working on perfecting your Novice routines as well. Let Jane know if you are interested.

Pet Cremation Services
There is a new service in town called Great Lakes Pet Memorial & Crematory. They have several pet cremation services available plus pet funeral services. Other products along this topic are available. Check out their website www.GLPetMemorial.com.Their showroom is located just south of Menards at Chums Corners. Family owned business Phone 231-645-3976

That's it for now - stay warm & dry!

WOW ! It's newsletter time again, and we certainly have lots going on - and more to come !

January has been a busy month with the carting workshop that was a huge hit! We know some of you still want to come, so we are planning another one, and also for those who did come to the first one, can come and get their harnesses fitted, dogs measured, look at carts - maybe even build yourself a starter cart! Look further in the newsletter to find out how you can be involved in this fun sport.

Agility league has started, and we will be playing our 4th game this week - BlackJack. This is a numbers game, but easy & fun. Don't forget the agility banquet planned for
Saturday, March 15th starting with the potluck at 12:30. Lots of surprises and fun awards, and a chance to meet your team members & sit back and swap stories. See the class schedule in this newsletter for days and times of league.

Dog Carting Workshop
We are interested in having another session working with our dogs and carts. If you are interested in doing this, even if it will be your first time, please let me know when would be a good time - evening, daytime or weekend. Once the weather breaks we should be able to do more of this outside. But right now, especially learning about the safety of carting, and teaching your dog what shafts mean, and what do you mean, how to stop your dog? Please email me what works for you. Joy is pretty flexible, and we will accommodate as many as we can.

NEW! Rally class - New Signs & Rule Changes
Effective January 1, 2008
For those of you who are doing rally, and those of you who want to start rally , there are a few new signs this year. It affects all 3 levels. (Novice, Advanced, & Excellent). There are even some non-regular classes in rally. I know some of you are going off to trials shortly to do rally, so we have agreed here at the training center, that this is important enough, that we are going to hold rally classes here starting Friday night, Feb. 8 & 15; and Feb.29 & March 7. At 7 PM will be discussion on new signs & any changes on previous signs that you need to know about. Course time will begin at 7:15 PM and end at 8:30 PM. Cost is $10 per night per dog. We will do our best to nest courses so different levels can be done. If you plan to attend, please let me know what days and what level you want." As of January 1, 2008, the Rally section of the Obedience Regulations (AKC) is null and void. The revised regulations are located in the cream-colored supplemental book to the Obedience Regulations. Therapy Dogs International (TDI) is a volunteer group organized to provide qualified handlers and their Therapy Dogs for visitation in a variety of facilities and settings. The "Children Reading to Dogs" program is one of TDI's newest services. Schools & Libraries are quickly discovering the value of Therapy Dogs. We would be doing the testing some time in the spring. For more info on Therapy Dogs International, see www.tdi-dog.org.

The High Dog Walk

CAUTION: Please be aware that the intersection coming off of US 131 is NOT being plowed this winter. You can either turn on to Shippy Rd or Hudson Rd to get access to Woodman Rd. If you need help with directions, please call or email me & I would be happy to help you with alternate directions. Sorry - the county has declared the intersection where the little bypass comes on to Woodman Road as a hazardous intersection (go figure).
